Fully Funded for Haiti!

We are so excited to share that Matt is fully funded for his mission trip to Haiti!

He sent out a follow up letter shortly before coming home at the end of  Winter Quarter and he had only received $550 up to that point.  When he went back a few weeks later to get the list of donors to write “thank you” cards, he was completely shocked to find out he was fully funded!  He has received the entire $3000 he needed to make this trip!  We are all so thankful for each person who has helped make this happen for Matt!

For those of you who have not heard, Matt will be traveling to Haiti this summer with a group from the Louisiana Tech Wesley Foundation.  They will be leaving at the end of May and spending about 30 days on La Gonave Island doing various reconstruction projects, but they are also hoping to assist in medical aid clinics and interacting with the local children.

La Gonave Island is off of the mainland of Haiti.  Once they arrive in Haiti, they will then have to travel by boat to La Gonave.  What we’ve heard, from the various videos we have seen, is that while Haiti is the land that the world forgot, La Gonave is the land that Haiti forgot. I think this will be an amazing learning and growing experience for Matt and the rest of the team.

La Gonaveedited

Brian found this short video about La Gonave that I wanted to share with you.  While this is not the organization that Matt’s group will be working with, it does give you a little insight into the people of La Gonave and how they live.  I have watched it a couple of times and what stands out to me is the smiles.  The children have the most beautiful smiles, even in the midst of their economic poverty.  My heart is filled with so much joy when I see their smiles!

When Matt was home over break, we got started preparing for his trip.  Oh my goodness, we were busy!  He received his vaccinations, we bought toiletries and medical supplies, and we even went shopping for clothes just so he would have something to wear on the trip (the boy won’t stop growing!).  It’s amazing what all he needs for a month long trip, and we didn’t even get everything on the list.  Some things will just have to wait until closer to the time he leaves.

Again, thank you so much to all who donated funds toward this trip!  And please, continue to pray for him and the rest of the team as they prepare both physically and spiritually to serve these wonderful people in La Gonave, Haiti.  He wouldn’t be able to do this without each and every one of you!

The Winter That Would Never End

I don’t know about you, but I am soooo ready for spring!

It snowed Wednesday and there is a chance again on Monday.  Arghh!

I know come August I’ll be tired of being hot, but right now I’m so tired of being cold!

At some point during this never ending winter, Daniel and Sarah’s tennis shoes were left outside on the back patio.

And then we got ice…

I had never seen frozen tennis shoes before.

And they were frozen…solid.

I left them in the sink overnight and prayed they would dry out without mildew setting in.

It took several days, but thankfully they dried out and were ready to wear again.  Considering these were their only pairs of tennis shoes and I really couldn’t afford to buy new ones, I was a really, really happy mom. (Not to mention we had just bought Daniel’s pair not a month before they were frozen!)

Sarah loves the snow.

Daniel, not so much.  (That really is him standing behind her.)

Matt was so ready to go back to sunny and warm Louisiana!

Currently my dreams include images like this…

Unfortunately, there will be no beach over Spring Break this year.

I’ll just have to set out my beach chair on a sunny, warm, sandy beach in my dreams…

The Grand Sweep: March 10-16

Ok, so I missed last week and almost missed this week.  I’m not sure where the time goes in a day, but if you find it would you send some my way!

Matt left yesterday after spending his quarter break here with us remembering that it wasn’t quite spring yet.  You forget this fact living in Louisiana.  He was so happy to feel 70 degree weather again!

Brian left last Thursday for a conference in Idaho and then straight on to England.  He won’t be back state-side again until the 27th.  I’m already tired and it’s only just the beginning.

With all the craziness I haven’t been doing my Bible reading and oh how I feel it.  Why is it that when life gets crazy and we get tired, we don’t do the one thing that can keep us going strong – crawling into the lap of the One who gives us the strength to keep going?

So, here’s this week’s readings.  Settle into His lap with me and feel those arms hold on tight as we read the words He has given us.

March 10   Deuteronomy 21 – 23, Psalms 51

March 11   Deuteronomy 24-26

March 12   Deuteronomy 27-29

March 13  Deuteronomy 30-32

March 14  Deuteronomy 33 & 34, Psalms 52 & 53

March 15   Joshua 1-3

March 6   Joshua 4-6
